Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine Jacobson was born and raised within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam, Jazmine's mother is a former backing singer for Philadelphia International Records. In the age of five the father of her was appointed as one of the cities' Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. Their family eventually moved to the historic mansion. She was a graduate in 2005 of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was the vocal music instructor. Sullivan began singing in the children's choir as a contralto later she joined the adult chorus a couple of years afterwards. The exposure Sullivan had to secular music was initially minimal "I performed solos at churches and a person wanted me to be a part of an evangelical label when I had turned eleven, however I wasn't prepared to sign that contract," she recalls. "Then McDonald's offered a competition that was open to kids in cities. The competition gave me the chance to sing Accept God's Will on Showtime Apollo. My fans were very accommodating." She performed with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday party at thirteen. Sullivan signed her first contract with Jive Records when she was 15. There, she recorded an entire album. But the album wasn't released. Sullivan was eventually dropped from the label. She had a good working partnership to Missy Elliott. Elliott produced some of her tracks and tracks, such as "Backstabbers", which was written by Timbaland.
